How to Choose the Right Commercial RO Plant Capacity for Your Facility

Learn how to calculate daily water consumption, raw water TDS, and peak flow rates before selecting a 500 LPH or 2,000 LPH RO system for your facility.
How to Choose the Right Commercial RO Plant Capacity for Your Facility

How to Choose the Right Commercial RO Plant Capacity for Your Facility

> Direct Answer: Sizing a commercial Reverse Osmosis (RO) plant requires dividing your facility's total daily purified water requirement (in liters) by the intended daily operational operating hours (typically 12 to 16 hours for commercial setups, leaving buffer for backwash and maintenance), then applying a 20% safety factor for peak demand. A facility requiring 10,000 liters daily should install a 1,000 LPH (Liters Per Hour) RO plant.

Step 1: Calculate Total Daily Purified Water Demand

Every commercial industry has distinct water consumption patterns:

Facility TypeConsumption BenchmarkTypical Daily VolumeRecommended Plant Size
Hotels & Resorts150–200 L per room/day8,000 – 15,000 L1,000 LPH to 2,000 LPH
Commercial Offices10–15 L per employee/day3,000 – 5,000 L500 LPH
Hospitals & Clinics250–350 L per bed/day15,000 – 30,000 L2,000 LPH to 3,000 LPH
Restaurants & Cafes25–40 L per seat/day4,000 – 8,000 L500 LPH to 1,000 LPH
Manufacturing & ETPProcess specific20,000 – 100,000+ L5,000 LPH to 10,000+ LPH

Step 2: The Sizing Formula

Never size an RO plant based on a 24-hour continuous run without redundancy. Always design for 12 to 16 hours of daily runtime:

Engineering Calculation Formula\tRequired RO Capacity (LPH) = \f(\tTotal Daily Volume Required (L) / \tOperating Hours per Day) \t× 1.20\t (Safety Buffer)

Example Calculation for a 60-Room Hotel:

  • Daily demand: 60 \t× 180\t L = 10,800\t Liters
  • Planned operational window: 12\t hours
  • Base capacity needed: 10,800 / 12 = 900\t LPH
  • Applying 20% safety factor: 900 \t× 1.20 = 1,080\t LPH
  • Selected Model: Standard 1,000 LPH or 1,500 LPH Commercial RO Plant.

Step 3: Raw Water TDS and Membrane Array Selection

Feed water TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) determines the required operating pressure and membrane configuration:

  • TDS < 1,500 ppm: Low-energy brackish water 4040 membranes (4'' \t× 40'') operating at 150–180 PSI.
  • TDS 1,500 – 3,500 ppm: Standard brackish water 4040/8040 membranes operating at 200–250 PSI.
  • TDS > 3,500 ppm: High-pressure fouling-resistant membranes operating at 300–400+ PSI.
